Apple introduced a new version of its iTunes Music store at a news conference Tuesday.
The company says the new software will deliver improved performance and allow users to preview content while browsing. It’ll also have improved search results.
The new setup seems easier to use. It allows users to see their music playlists at the same time as their entire music libraries. Creating playlists is much easier now, too.
A feature called “What’s Next” allows you to see, well, what are the next few songs in your playlist. You can also use it to play the songs you’d like to hear next instead of what’s due.
A new mini-player brings basic controls at the touch of the button.
And iCloud support is built in. The new iTunes will arrive in October.
Apple says it’s sold 350 million iPods. It introduced several new models:
— iPod Nano: the seventh generation of the model is 5.4 millimeters thick, or 38 percent thinner than before. Operating buttons are on the left side and it’s a 2.5 inch multi-touch display, almost like a mini iPod Touch.
It’ll come in seven colors: aluminum, black, purple, green, blue, yellow, red, and it’ll have a built in FM tuner with the ability to pause and rewind the radio feed. There’s also a fitness and pedometer built in.
The Nano also features bluetooth for wireless audio streaming. It uses Apple’s new Lightning charging/syncing port an supports 30 hours of music playback.
— iPod Touch: Apple says the iPhone without a phone, as some call it, has 175,000 games available for it and 150 million Game Center players. The fifth gen iPod Touch is 6.1 millimeters thick and weighs 88 grams. It’s got a Retina display and has a brushed aluminum rear finish. It’s also got the same 4-inches tall display as iPhone 5. It’ll also get Siri.
The Touch will come in five colors: aluminum, black. blue, yellow and red. It’ll be available in October for $299 for 32 gigs, $399 for 64 gigs. The current smaller iPod Touch remains in the lineup at $199 for 16 gigs, and $249 for 32 gigs. The iPod Nano is $149 for 16 gigs. Preorders begin 9/14.
The new model offers seven times the graphics performance of the old one. The new Touch supports up to 40 hours of music playbook, 8 hours of video. These are slight increases, Apple says, over previous generations.
The new Touch sports a 5 megapixel camera and a crystal lens cover like the iPhone 5. Like the new iPhone, the Touch can take panoramic photos. Also, users can attach a (included) wrist strap to the back of the Touch for security.
For video, Touch has the same 720P high def front facing camera and 1080P rear that iPhone 5 has.
Apple also announced new earphones. They are now called EarPods. They fit inside the ear and point to the ear canal. Apple said it designed them after studying hundreds of ears “looking for commonality.” The new earphones are designed to fit inside the ear but without creating a seal. Each earphone is also like a separate speaker with ports for midrange and bass separately.
They will ship with new fifth gen iPod Touch, iPhone 5 and 7th gen iPhone Nano. They’ll also be sold separately beginning today.
— There are 26 million songs in iTunes and 20 billion purchased since launch nine years ago.
— the iTunes store is available in 63 countries.
