Apple iPhone 4S top 4 million in opening weekend

Well, so much for an Apple sales slump.

After some tepid initial reviews to the launch of an iPhone 4S that was nearly identical to its predecessor, customers seem to love the speed and software improvements that Apple has made for its signature device.

First there were more than one million pre-sales of the device when it was made available a little over a week ago, and from Friday, Oct. 14 to Sunday, Oct. 16, Apple reports it sold more than four million iPhone 4s. And considering that Apple was selling a new, 8-gig version of the iPhone 4 for $99 and selling the iPhone 3GS for free with two year contract, total iPhone sales should be well above that figure.

Apple also reported more than 25 million customers are now using its new iOS5 operating system for iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS as well as late generation iPods plus iPads. It said more than 20 million have signed up for its iCloud online storage and syncing system.

Somewhere, Steve Jobs is smiling.

iPhone 4S First Weekend Sales Top Four Million

CUPERTINO, California—October 17, 2011— Apple® today announced it has sold over four million of its new iPhone® 4S, just three days after its launch on October 14. iPhone 4S comes in either black or white and is available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model, $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 (US) for the new 64GB model.* iPhone 4S is available from the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores and through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and select Best Buy, Target and Walmart stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. iPhone 4 is available for just $99 (US) and iPhone 3GS is available for free with a two year contract.
