No, there still aren’t a lot of tablet-centric apps in the Android Market, but there is now a long-awaited one.
Sling Media has dropped the new SlingPlayer app for Android. You have to be running versions 3.0 or later of the Google Android operating system, but if you do, the app brings all the streaming goodness of the iOS version.
The skinny: you plug the app into your tablet and buy a Slingbox SOLO or Pro model and connect that to your cable or satellite box. There’s some techie magic that goes in the background, but once you are connected to the Internet, you can wirelessly view whatever your cable or sat box is tuned to from wherever you are. You can also change the channel and in some cases use DVR controls.
It’s all really, really cool — but watch those data consumption limits. Unless you’re on Sprint.
Here’s the press release:
Sling Media Announces Availability of SlingPlayer for Android Tablets
Foster City, Calif. – October 11, 2011-Sling Media, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ: SATS), today announced the availability of SlingPlayer™ for tablets running versions 3.0 or later of the Android™ operating system. Available for purchase on the Android Market, the application lets Slingbox® owners extend their living room TV experience to their tablets and takes advantage of the higher performance, screen resolutions and video quality the latest Android devices can deliver. New to this release of SlingPlayer is a revamped program guide that makes it easy to browse content choices while continuing to watch TV. Familiar custom on-screen remote controls closely mimic the same experience the user has from the couch at home.
“A Slingbox is the perfect accessory to an Android tablet,” said Raghu Tarra, senior vice president and general manager at Sling Media. “When combined with SlingPlayer, now anyone with an Android device can enjoy a beautiful, personalized TV experience anywhere in the world.”
How It Works
When connected to a Slingbox SOLO or PRO-HD, the award-winning SlingPlayer software makes it easy to watch your home TV on your Android tablet running Android version 3.0 or later. Now Slingbox owners with Android tablets can change channels, control their DVRs and watch their favorite shows anywhere they have an Internet connection. They never have to miss another show or game, no matter where they are. To learn more, visit www.slingbox.com.
