Iolo Software’s $29.95 “System Mechanic” software download promises to help your PC run better and even speed up your Internet connection speeds and download times.
We downloaded the product recently and put it to the test. Bottom line? It works.
We tried it on three machines: a new desktop, a 5-year-old malware infested laptop and a 3-year-old computer that hasn’t been used on the Internet much at all, just serving as a home server.
As expected, the software didn’t do much for the home server computer but it found lots of registry errors on the other two and actually made us abandon a complete re installation of Windows on the 5-year-old computer that had its fair share of viruses.
The software is super simple to use. You download it, run it and go through a simple series of button presses to clean up your system. Because System Mechanic can also de-fragment your system, it eliminates the need for a separate program to run along side of it, and based on our tests, the two computers the software affected most really felt faster afterwards.
We didn’t do any benchmark tests, but combined with a good spyware/malware program, this could be a neat addition for most PC users. One of our friends asked was there a Mac version he liked it so much. Sadly, no, but if you’re a Windows guy, there are worse ways to spend 30 bucks.
